Benefits of Living in a Beautiful Space
Scientists have done alot of research on the benefits of interior design and are now able to measure the physiological and neuro-scientific benefits of experiencing beauty. Studies have shown that the physical things that we use, the buildings we occupy, and the cities that we live in can be designed to reduce stress and improve our overall healing and well-being.
For example, due to advancements in environmental psychology, architects now approach hospital design from a perspective of patient experience rather than treatment efficiency to aid in the healing process. Modern hospital design now takes into account certain psychological objectives such as reducing stress response, increasing feelings of love and comfort, and promoting overall healing. These efforts are reflected in seemingly trivial decisions such as deciding to increase the number of windows per room, adding certain colors, and changing the choice of wall paint.
Likewise, residential interior design also benefits from this body of knowledge. If you want to bring more wellness and beauty into your home keep reading for 5 interior trends for 2021 that you can incorporate into your living space.
What Makes a Space Beautiful
When it comes to aesthetics, beauty is associated with balance and symmetry. Balance in interior design refers to the visual calmness of a space. If you want to make your space more beautiful, find ways to make it appear more balanced. According to Havenly, there are 2 ways to achieve balance - symmetry and asymmetry.
Symmetrical design involves creating mirror images using visual pairs. Instead of opting for only one bedroom side table, purchase two and add one to each side of your bed.
Asymmetrical design involves creating balance with items that are different but cohesive. A great example of asymmetrical design is a curated photo gallery wall like this one that was featured in the Future AirBnb project.
Improving the balance in your environment can have a tremendous impact on your mental health and increase your overall productivity while you’re working from home.
How to Make Your Space More Beautiful in 2021
Now that we have the heavy lifting out of the way and you have a clear understanding of the benefits that living in a beautiful home provides and what makes a space beautiful, I want to give you 5 ways to make your space more beautiful this year. Since you’re going to be stuck in the house for most of the year, you might as well make it a place that you could spend forever. Here are 5 Interior designs trends for 2021 that you can incorporate into your living space.
1.) Add a touch of gray or yellow.
Pantone released their 2021 color of the year and this time it happened to be a duo. The colors that were chosen were Ultimate Gray and Illuminating. Described as “practical and rock solid but at the same time warm and optimistic”, adding Ultimate Gray and Illuminating provides a touch of strength and positivity to your space.
Include specks of these colors in your living space by incorporating smaller items like pillows and throws. Here’s an image of the ‘Eryka’ Pillow that was featured in the Future AirBnB project. The pillows add a pop of color that balances the room and draws your eyes to the place that you will find rest and relaxation.

2.) Give your home office a bold remodel.
Now that we’re spending more time inside, it’s imperative that we work in spaces that are ergonomically and aesthetically pleasing. To get a different feel in your home office, try out these quick tips:
Give one of your walls a bold splash of color.
Accent walls give you a simple way to perk up your space. Not only does it add a little bit of flair, it also gives your space the appearance of being larger than it actually is. The color featured on this wall is Blackish by Clare Paint.
Add your favorite couch.
Emerald green was my Mother’s favorite color so naturally, I would include it in my design arsenal. This couch adds a nice touch of color to my black and white office space.
3.) Covid-Proof Layouts
You’ve seen the ugly red dots on the super market floors. They’re hideous! But, they’re important.
We don’t want to be in this pandemic forever so it would be a good idea to do everything we can to prevent the virus from spreading. Even though those red dots are very rough on the eyes they serve a purpose and we can incorporate our own version of social distancing design into our spaces.
Here are a few articles that can help you get started with your social distancing designs:
4.) Minimalism.
Less is more.
The benefits of approaching things from a minimalistic perspective has benefits that extend beyond interior design. Minimalism requires that you release all things that are unnecessary and that distract you from your core purpose.
So, forget those ideas you had to redo your wall art. Every wall doesn’t need something on it.
5.) Trust your Interior Designer.
Last, but most definitely not least, trust your interior designer. There’s a reason we spend time and money to learn the art of interior styling. I will save the specifics for a later post but I want to be clear in communicating that you can never go wrong by consulting a designer for your project.
